Season 4 has been all about bilingualism, multilingualism and various crosslinguistic pedagogical approaches. In this episode, I had the privilege of interviewing Johanne Paradis, Professor in the Department of Linguistics and Adjunct Professor in Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Alberta. Johanne has published more than 70 peer-reviewed journal articles and chapters on bilingual children and is first author of Dual Language Development and Disorders, 3rd Edition, Brookes Publishing (2021). Throughout this episode, we talk mostly about immigrant or refugee children learning English-as-a-second language. We also touch on language disorders in bilingual children. Johanne provides many tips and advice for teachers, educators and speech-language pathologists. Here are a few examples:

Advice for teachers/SLPs/educators
  • Encouraging the use of the Heritage Language at home;
  • Making bilingualism the foundation for everything;      
  • Finding ways to support the Heritage language even if you don’t speak it;
  • Building a team approach (parents, older children, community members, people from the school, etc.) to intervention with children who speak a language that is different from the language that the adult speaks .

As well as advice for parents who mainly speak a heritage language in the home.

Advice for parents
  • Speak the heritage language at home;
  • Redirect your child to the heritage language;
  • Recast what they say in English in the Heritage language;
  • Expand what your child says in the heritage language by adding a few more words;
  • Maximize exposure to different speakers of the heritage language;
  • Create diversity of experience in the heritage language;
  • Read books, tell stories and/or listen to music in the heritage language;
  • If you text with your children, text in the heritage language.

In this episode, which is part of a series on all things bilingual, Dr. Genesee and I talk about dual language learners, language use in schools, and the impact of the majority language on minority language acquisition in both minority language schools (ex. French language schools) and immersion programs. Dr. Genesee gives very useful strategies that can be used by educators who are interested in exploring a bilingual or a crosslinguistic approach in a meaningful way. We talk about how we can support the use of the children’s linguistic resources in order to help them acquire and maintain the minority language. We also talk about the importance of establishing clear goals when using crosslinguistic or translanguaging approaches as well as the parents’ role in their child’s acquisition of a minority language, be it their home language or the school language.

When I started this podcast back in 2019, I wasn’t entirely sure how it would unfold. I am thrilled with the outcome, with over 15 000 downloads, 46 episodes and guests from all over the world. Today I am releasing Season 4 with an episode on one of my favorite topics: bilingualism and multilingualism with Dr. Jasone Cenoz. Dr. Cenoz is a professor of education at the University of the Basque Country. Her research focuses on bilingualism and multilingualism in education and on pedagogical translanguaging.
 
Pedagogical translanguaging is “a theoretical and instructional approach that aims at improving language and content competences in school contexts by using resources from the learner's whole linguistic repertoire. Pedagogical translanguaging is learner-centred and endorses the support and development of all the languages used by learners. It fosters the development of metalinguistic awareness by softening of boundaries between languages when learning languages and content.” (Cenoz and Gorter, 2021).

In this article, Dr. Cenoz and Dr. Gorter provide the following 5 guiding principles for sustainable translanguaging for regional minority languages:
1. Design functional breathing spaces for using the minority language
2. Develop the need to use the minority languages through translanguaging
3. Use emergent multilinguals’resources to reinforce all languages by developing metalinguistic awareness
4. Enhance language awareness
5. Link spontaneous translanguaging to pedagogical activities

You asked for it, so I delivered. Join me during this episode as I answer some of the frequent questions I get from families surrounding raising English-French bilingual kids in an English dominant community. During the episode, I talk to a few bilingual kids ranging from 8 to 14 years of age about their thoughts on language use. I also interview my dear husband, Kevin, to ask him about his experience as an anglophone parent raising bilingual kids and his journey as he learned a minority language. I also give several tips on what is required when learning a minority language in order to ensure mastery of this language.
